Homework & ADHD
As a parent of a 10 year old boy with ADHD homework time is a nightmare!! At our school the children have Ipad Mini's with all of their homework to be done through the device. It's a learning process to say the least! As I have learned children with ADHD need a routine for EVERYTHING!!
A Homework routine is best here is some guidelines -
- Check your child's homework assignment book daily. Be aware of what is accepted of the child. You may need to get a copy of this directly from the teacher.
- Set a time when homework is to be done each day. We actually set a timer for each task.
- Provide a quiet and calm environment with no distractions. Do not allow other family members to interrupt.
- Allow your child to use the computer if the homework requires it. Set a time frame so they don't stray away from the task on hand.
- Schedule breaks during homework so they can "let off steam" ADHD kids tends to get frustrated easily. Allow them a break to go do something else and come back to the task.
- Praise/Reward your child for completing homework - us a star chart or something similar that after so many they get a reward of their choice. Positive feedback makes all the difference.
I'd love to hear what works for you and your child. Please feel free to comment!
